CLAREMONT, Calif. (Mar. 9, 2019) – The Caltech women's water polo team held its own with host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday, hanging six total goals on the Athenas over the course of the game.
"We got off to great start, keep good control of the ball, and defended an onslaught of attacks by CMS in the first quarter," Head Coach Jon Bonafede said. "Our defense let up a bit in the third, but we were still playing good team water polo. This was a great tune-up for this week's games."
Senior Brittany Percin (Lake Tahoe, Calif. / Stanford Online) got Caltech's first goal of the game, knotting things at one goal apiece in the first quarter. Freshman Sophie Devoe (La Jolla, Calif. / Bishop's) later connected with an open Percin on a 20-meter pass for the senior's second goal in the third quarter. Percin added one assist to go with her pair of goals, which contributed to her streak of four-consecutive two-goal appearances. Freshman Yuying Lin (Scarborough, Ontario / Victoria Park C.I.) added to her own scoring streak, finding the back of the net for a third-straight game with an off-speed shot. Junior Samantha D'Costa ( San Jose, Calif. / St. Francis), along with seniors Michelle Zhao (San Diego, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) and Gemma Takahashi (San Jose, Calif. / Leland) also scored for Caltech.
Leading scorer Katie Johnston ( Livermore, Calif. / Livermore) did not score for the Beavers but excelled when the Athenas double-teamed Percin. Freshman goalkeeper Zoe Rock (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) additionally had her moments in net, and came away with four saves.
Bonafede and the Beavers will return home on Wednesday, Mar. 13 to host Connecticut College at 7 p.m.
