CLAREMONT, Calif. (Mar. 4, 2017) – Caltech women's water polo opened the 2017 season at the four-match Claremont Convergence Tournament this past weekend. Sophomore Brittany Percin (Lake Tahoe, Calif. / Stanford Online) led the Beavers with 13 goals in three games, including a 13-9 defeat to Grove City College.
The Beavers had multiple highlights over the weekend, particularly in the opening match on Saturday against Grove City as Percin fired home four of her eventual seven goals to stake Caltech to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter. The visitors posted a 5-0 edge in the second to lead 7-4 at halftime, but Caltech responded quickly with a two-goal advantage in the third to pull back within a single tally when junior Devi Ganapathi (La Crescenta, Calif. / Crescenta Valley) scored on a buzzer-beater to end the quarter. Grove City scored first in the final period, but Percin matched a few minutes later on a steal and whip around to make it 9-8. The Beavers were outscored 4-1 over the final four minutes, however.
Sophomore Katie Johnston (Livermore, Calif. / Livermore) added six goals over the tournament, including afive-goal effort in the opener against Occidental College in which senior Mary Boyajian (Sun Valley, Calif. / Village Christian) assisted twice. Johnston also set a Caltech single-game record when she drew eight of her team's 12 exclusions. Sophomore Gemma Takahashi (San Jose, Calif. / Leland) scored her first career goal and passed for her first assist in the same game, while freshman Sarah Kreider (River Forest, Ill. / Oak Park and River Forest) got her first taste of Division III action and made three saves against Grove City. Junior Ciara Ordner (Niceville, Fla. / Niceville), meanwhile made five saves in the Grove City game. Percin also scored once against Occidental while sophomore driver Hana Keller (Sammamish, Wash. / Tesla STEM), led with three assists.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers host Penn State-Behrend (0-5) in an Orange Out on Tuesday, Mar. 7 at 5 p.m.
