Boyajian Nets Twice in Defeat to VMI

PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 22, 2016) – Junior Mary Boyajian (Sun Valley, Calif. / Village Christian) scored twice in Caltech women's water polo's defeat to the Virginia Military Institute on Tuesday afternoon.

VMI took a 4-0 lead after the first quarter and tacked on three more on the first three possessions of the second before Boyajian put Caltech on the board with her first of the day.  The Keydets made it 9-1 by halftime as the Beavers were unable to capitalize on five extraman opportunities.

Freshman Brittany Percin (Moraga, Calif. / Stanford Online) extended her scoring streak to eight games late in the third quarter, at which point Caltech trailed 11-2.  Boyajian netted another consolation goal midway through the fourth and senior Soumya Kannan (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry M Gunn) converted a penalty in the final minute to make the final score 18-4.

Boyajian added two steals to her line while Kannan chipped in an assists and three steals.  Percin filled the stat sheet with five steals, six drawn exclusions and a field block while freshman Katie Johnston (Livermore, Calif. / Livermore) racked up three steals and two field blocks while playing excellent two-meter defense against the opposition center.

Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers (3-9) open SCIAC play at the University of La Verne (10-3, 1-0) tomorrow, Wednesday, Mar. 23 at 4 p.m.
