CLAREMONT, Calif. (Mar. 5, 2016) – Senior Soumya Kannan (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry M Gunn) tallied 10 goals over Caltech women's water polo's four games in the annual Claremont Convergence Tournament this past weekend.
The Beavers took on Division I St. Francis (N.Y.) University and SCIAC foes Occidental College, the University of Redlands and Chapman University in non-conference competition, falling to each in the absence of star freshman Brittany Percin (Moraga, Calif. / Stanford Online).
Caltech 3, St. Francis 19
The Terriers shot out to a 4-0 lead and regained the margin by the end of the quarter following a strike from junior Mary Boyajian (Sun Valley, Calif. / Village Christian). Kannan netted to make it a three-goal game but St. Francis surged ahead behind 14 unanswered goals, with Boyajian completing the brace with a consolation tally just three seconds before the final whistle.
Caltech 5, Occidental 19
The second game of the day was considerably tighter. Kannan sent Caltech ahead before four straight Oxy goals put the Tigers in front. Kannan brought the Beavers back within two at the end of the quarter, but Oxy scored the first five goals of the second quarter to take a commanding lead. Johnston would net once before halftime and Kannan scored her third and fourth goals in the fourth quarter, adding three steals while Johnston drew four exclusions and Cutts made 11 saves.
Caltech 4, Redlands 15
The Beavers began the second day of competition in an 8-0 hole at halftime against Redlands, but Kannan went off for all four Caltech scores in the second half. She also made four steals while Cutts blocked 13 shots.
Caltech 3, Chapman 18
Chapman jumped out to a 13-0 lead at halftime and extended the margin to 15 before Kannan netted the Beavers' first goal with 2:19 left in the third quarter. Sophomore Ciara Ordner (Niceville, Fla. / Niceville) and senior Alexandra Ilic (Austin, Texas / Westlake) each netted once before the final whistle as well. Kannan led the team with four steals and three exclusions drawn while senior Stephanie Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) stopped eight shots.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers host Penn State Behrend (0-5) in the home opener on Tuesday, Mar. 8 at 4 p.m.
