Quartet of Beavers Score at SCIAC Championships

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Apr. 25, 2015) – A quartet of Beavers scored as the Caltech women's water polo team closed out its season at the 2015 SCIAC Championships, hosted by Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, on Friday and Saturday.

Caltech took on Occidental College in the opening match of the tournament between the #8 and #9 seeds, with the Tigers advancing via a 17-3 victory.  The Beavers faced #6 seed Cal Lutheran University the next day and allowed their second-fewest goals against total this season in an 11-1 defeat.  Caltech finishes the season 0-20 overall and 0-10 in SCIAC play.

Friday: Caltech 3, Occidental 17

The Tigers jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and extended the margin to eight before senior Monica Enlow (Suwanee, Ga. / North Gwinnett) struck for the Beavers' first (her fifth of the season) at the 4:42 mark.  Oxy answered immediately but the Caltech defense locked down for the final four minutes to take the Beavers into halftime down 9-1.

Oxy scored the opener in the third quarter, but junior Soumya Kannan (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry M Gunn) responded by netting on the Beavers' next possession.  The Tigers would tack on seven more goals while sophomore Sasha Zemsky (Mount Kisco, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) did all she could in net against the barrage, making four saves over the game.  Junior Alexandra Ilic (Austin, Texas / Westlake) sent the Beavers off with her second goal of the season just 14 seconds before the final whistle.  Junior Stephanie Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) made a career- and team-season-high eight saves in net.

Saturday: Caltech 1, Cal Lutheran 11

The Regals dominated the first half, scoring all 11 goals in the first two quarters before the Beavers got into a groove on defense to shut out their opponents over the final 16 minutes.  Senior Emily Shih (Rockville, Md. / Montgomery Blair) finally put Caltech on the board just 1:30 from the final whistle with her only goal of the season, while Zemsky made a pair of saves.
