PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 10, 2015) – Freshman Carly Robison (Saratoga, Calif. / Castilleja) netted her first career goal and the Beavers' first home score of the season as the Caltech women's water polo team hosted Penn State University-Behrend on Tuesday evening. Caltech was cheered on by a throng of students and fans numbering well over 200 in the third Orange Out event of the year, which included t-shirts and a postgame ice cream buffet.
The Lions surged to an 8-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, recording a 19-4 final to improve to 1-5 while the Beavers dip to 0-5.
The visitors scored a goal in each of the first four minutes before Robison got to a rebound and slotted it into the net at the 3:43 mark. After a pair of Lions tallies, senior Shalini Majumdar (Orinda, Calif. / Miramonte) scored an exclusion goal to make it 6-2, but PS-Behrend netted two more before the end of the period for the 8-2 lead.
The Beavers defense would lock down over the second quarter, surrendering just one goal as sophomore Sasha Zemsky (Mount Kisco, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) made several big stops in the net. The hosts could not find the back of the net at the other end, though, hitting the woodwork multiple times as they were shut out over both the second and third quarters. PS-Behrend, meanwhile, notched five more goals in the third quarter and matched that tally in the fourth, while Majumdar and junior Soumya Kannan (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry M Gunn) mustered the only other Beaver scores with back-to-back long-range efforts for each of their ninth goals of the young season.
Head Coach Pat Beemer and the Beavers will take on Long Beach State and Marist College in Long Beach, Calif. on Saturday, Mar. 14.
