PASADENA, Calif. – The Chapman women's water polo squad broke open a tight game with a strong second period en route to a 16-7 win over Caltech on Friday evening.
The Beavers started the game well as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than three minutes into the game on goals by Erin Hoops and Hanna Dodd. However, the visitors responded with four unanswered goals over the next five minutes. Caltech scored the final goal of the stanza when Dodd found the back of the net with 26 seconds left on the clock.
The two squads traded goals in the early stages of the second period until Chapman slowly increased their advantage. Leading 7-5 with 4:28 left until the intermission, the visitors scored the final three goals of the stanza in taking a 10-5 edge after the first 16 minutes of action.
Janis Intoy scored the goals of the third period to cut the Caltech deficit to 10-6 (Video) but Chapman scored the final three goals of the frame to grab all the game's momentum heading into the final period.
Chapman won the final eight minutes of action 3-1 in sealing the victory. The lone goal for the Beavers came when Intoy fired a shot to the back of the net with 1:06 left in the game (Video).
The Panthers Riley Ford had a game high five goals while Sam Martin chipped in a hat trick to aid in the Chapman scoring effort.
Dodd and Intoy each recorded a three-goal effort for the Beavers against the nation's sixth ranked team.
