LA VERNE, Calif. (Oct. 25, 2019) – Senior Lauren Li (Bellaire, Texas / Bellaire) and Krystyna Maruszko (Redondo Beach, Calif. / Marymount) of the Caltech volleyball team earned single-season records with a pair of dominant performances at the University of La Verne on Friday evening. Li, who became the single-season kills record holder and first player in program history to register multiple 200-kill seasons, lifted the Beavers in parts of a highly contested match where the visiting team won the second set. Maruszko, meanwhile became the single-season assists record holder.
Li did not register a single one of her 18 kills until 26th point of the first set, but then proceeded to finish four of the final nine points of the first set where the Beavers came just short of tipping the scales in their favor early. The senior had five more kills in the second set, where this time the Beavers ended up on the right side of 25-23. The senior also led the visiting team with a .273 percentage thanks to a 3:1 kill-to-error ratio. Maruszko had 41 of her team's 53 assists to blow past the previous single-season mark with three matches left on the schedule. Maruszko's big season also puts her on pace for the career assists record, which she can earn in 2020.
Maruszko also had 18 digs, which came second on the team to sophomore libero Megan Wang (Henderson, Nev. / Advanced Technologies Academy). Wang maintained a strong defensive presence and had 40 digs in a match where her side scored at least 20 points in all four sets.
Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers will look to get back in the win column when they host California Lutheran University on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m.
