MILWAUKEE, Wisc. (Sept. 8, 2018) – Outside hitters Lauren Li (Bellaire, Texas / Bellaire) and Hannah Fan (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) each totaled 20 kills between the Caltech volleyball team's final two matches at this weekend's MSOE Invitational, hosted by the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Benedictine (Ill.) 3, Caltech 1
The freshman Fan had the strong game in the early match of Saturday's doubleheader, scoring 14 kills in addition to the highest kill percentage of all Beavers with at least eight attempts. Li, the Beavers' junior outside presence had nine kills. Freshman setter Alexandra Frymire (Dallas, Texas / Greenhill) and junior Ellie Walker (Minneapolis, Minn. / Blake School) set up the Beavers' offensive playmakers with 18 and 14 assists each. Freshman middle blocker Alison Noyes (Falmouth, Maine / Falmouth) contributed seven kills in addition to two assisted blocks. Caltech's best set came in the third when the Beavers broke out of a 14-14 stalemate to finish the set on an 11-4 run.
Wisconsin-Platteville 3, Caltech 1
Caltech opened its second match of the day with a first set win over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. This time, Li led the Beavers with 11 kills and also contributed defensively with 15 digs, as one of four Beavers to have at least 10. Fan, along with classmate libero Megan Wang (Henderson, Nev. / Advanced Technologies Academy), each had 21 digs. Frymire, meanwhile, reached 20 assists and delivered eight kills, four of which came in Caltech's victorious first set. The freshman also chipped in a team-best three service aces. Freshman middle blocker Sydney Richardson (Granite Bay, Calif. / Roseville) matched Frymire with eight kills and also added one assisted block.
Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers will open up their SCIAC schedule on Friday, Sept. 14 when they travel to Whittier College for a 7 p.m. showdown.
