PASADENA, Calif. – The Caltech volleyball team hosted the No. 2 ranked team in the country on Friday when it faced the Cal Lutheran Regals. The Beavers played a courageous match against the powerful Cal Lu attack, but fell in three sets (25-11, 25-12, 25-12). Caltech played hard from start to finish and had some good runs that included service aces and strong defense.
"We played so hard," said coach Tom Gardner. "I am very proud of the way we fought against an excellent team."
The Beavers were led by junior co-captain Catherine Jamshidi who totaled 8 kills, 2 aces, and a block. Freshman Mayra Melendez added 7 digs and a kill, and junior Amy Hu finished with 11 assists.
Gardner added: "Everyone went all out and didn't let up from the first point to the last. We served tough and played some of our best defense of the year. Our hitters were smart and we had a good number of attacks because of some great passing."
The team also saw action at Pomona on Saturday, falling to the Sagehens (25-6, 25-11, 25-11).
The Beavers take the court on Tuesday night at home against rival Occidental at 7:30.
