Volleyball Plays the Poets, Shows Good Direction

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Caltech volleyball team played a solid match Tuesday night against the Poets from Whittier College. The Beavers started strongly and kept the first set close before eventually falling 15-25.

"I was really pleased with our play," coach Tom Gardner said.

Whittier, which now sits at fourth in the conference with a 4-2 record, played the second and third sets with a little more fire. The Poets took down the Caltech team, 25-9, 25-10, to finish the night. Whittier was led by Alexis Mills, Vanessa Rodriguez and Haley Whyte who had eight, eight, and seven kills, respectively.

"Whittier is a good team," added Gardner, "and it doesn't make many mistakes, but we hung in there and rallied with them."

The Beavers earned strong play from Catherine Jamshidi who had five kills on 26 attempts to go along with two aces. Additionally, Alison Lui had a pair of kills.

"We passed really well and went for every ball," Gardner said. "The players worked so hard and had great chemistry on the court, celebrating each play and keeping their heads up. I like the direction in which we are headed."

The Beavers next see action on Friday at the Braun Athletic Center against Cal Lutheran at 7:30 pm.
