Beavers Battle Late but Leopards Leap Early

PASADENA, Calif. - The Caltech volleyball team lost to a powerful La Verne Leopards team who performed with a very balanced attack.  The visitors had four players with five or more kills and were led by outside hitter Brittany Yaxley (8 kills and 13 service aces).

The Leopards, now 10-2 overall and 5-1 in the SCIAC, swept the Beavers (25-3, 25-6, 25-15) in what was another slow-starting match for Caltech.

"We were two sets down before we woke up," stated coach Tom Gardner.  "I am very disappointed with the way we showed up and know that we are more like the team that took the court in the third set. "

The Beavers had a much stronger showing in the third, as they put up 15 points with four kills. Overall, Catherine Jamshidi recorded four kills and a match-leading 16 total attacks on the evening.

Gardner added: "La Verne's outside hitter has one of the best serves I have seen, but we needed to make a play.  Our continuing struggles in serve receive is overshadowing all the great things that we have been improving upon."

Junior Amarise Little was another bright spot for the Beavers.  "She played at the net very well," Gardner said, "and had some good touches in trying to slow down the Leopard attack."

Caltech travels to Whittier on Tuesday for a 7:30 pm SCIAC match against the Poets.
