PASADENA, Calif. – The Caltech volleyball team lost its home opener against the University of Redlands on Saturday in three straight sets: 7-25, 13-25, 14-25. The Beavers got a solid outing from Catherine Jamshidi who had 7 kills, 10 digs, a block, and an ace.
"It felt great to be at home after having so many games on the road," Jamshidi said. "We definitely fed off the crowd's energy in that third set."
As the Beavers settled their nerves, they put together some nice strings of points in the second and third sets.
"We played very well in the last half of the second set and the first half of the third," said head coach Tom Gardner. "We had a couple of great scoring runs of four or five points, which we have struggled with, but we continue to start slowly."
The Bulldogs were led by Kiersten Lanerud who had 5 kills, Annie Boyle who put down 4 balls, and setter Lauren Ellingwood who had 15 assists in their first match win of the season.
Gardner added: "Having seen what we are capable of, I expect more from the team and a full match of good play. We served tougher and played solid defense, but we still need better passing and more offense."
The Beavers take the court next on Saturday, September 27 against La Verne in the Braun Athletic Center.
