SANTA ANA, Calif. – The Caltech volleyball team took on Santa Ana College on Wednesday night, the sixth straight road contest for the Beavers. Caltech got off to a slow start and didn't come into form until the third set.
The Beavers dropped the first two sets, 9-25 and 11-25, and did not show much fight. At the start of the third set, however, the visitors jumped out to an early lead and played the Dons tough. With the score knotted at 14, Santa Ana surged forward with some strong offense, but Caltech stayed in the game until it finally fell, 20-25. The Beavers got a spark off the bench in first-year students, Mayra Melendez and Anna Winnicki.
"We played a great third set with grit and determination," Caltech coach Tom Gardner said. "We gave our all and the effort certainly paid off and we are closer to realizing our potential."
On being asked about the first two sets, Gardner replied: "We came out flat and couldn't get our feet moving. We need to work harder on starting out strong."
The Beavers are again on the road Friday to take on CMS at 7:30 pm before returning for their home opener on Saturday against Redlands at 6 pm.
