Beavers Host a Pair of SCIAC Matches

PASADENA, CA -- The Caltech volleyball team started SCIAC play with a pair of matches on Saturday as they hosted Pomona-Pitzer in the morning and Occidental in the late afternoon.

Pomona-Pitzer 3, Caltech 0 (Box Score)

Pomona-Pitzer overcame a spirited Caltech squad 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-22) on Saturday morning in the SCIAC opening for the Beavers.

In the opening set the Beaver came out strong and held an early 8-5 advantage. However, the Sagehens responded with a big scoring spurt. The visitors scored 20 of the set's final 22 points in taking the 1-0 lead in the contest.

Pomona-Pitzer never trailed in the second set. After the Sagehens took a seemingly commanding 9-4 lead, the Beavers chipped away and got their deficit down to one point at 11-10. However, that was as close as they would get as Pomona-Pitzer finished the set on a 14-2 scoring spurt.

Caltech started solid again in the third set as they grabbed a 6-2 early lead. Unfortunately the Pomona-Pitzer offense started to click as they chipped away at their deficit and took a 16-15 lead. Caltech responded and held a 20-18 lead late in the set. However, the visitors would let the Beavers grow their lead as they won seven of the final nine points in the set.

The Pomona-Pitzer duo of Michelle Schultz and Samantha Cahill each registered a match high 11 kills.

Caltech's offense was led by Paige Logan's season best nine-kill effort. Rachel Hess had a personal and match high 16 assists to aid in the Beavers effort.

#23 Occidental 3, Caltech 0 (Box Score) 

The 23rd ranked team in the nation used an efficient hitting attack en route to the 3-0 (25-13, 25-5, 25-11) victory.

Occidental had 36 team kills on their 66 attempts while recording just three errors for a .500 hitting percentage. Leading the way was Kasey Rose's 11 kills. Eight different Tiger players had at least one kill in the conference win.

Caltech put together an 18-kill team performance led by Paige Logan's six. Katie Ching pitched in five kills.
