All Around Effort Leads Whittier Past Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. – Whittier had seven different players record at least two kills in their 3-0 (25-19, 25-8, 25-8) win over Caltech on Saturday evening in a SCIAC women's volleyball contest.

The win lifts the Poets record to 4-12 overall and 2-3 in league matches while Caltech falls to 0-10 and 0-5 respectively.

In the first set the Poets raced out to a 14-4 lead but the home squad fought back. The Beavers chipped away and got within three points at 20-17 but couldn't get any closer as Whittier won five of the next seven points to claim the set. During the first stanza the Beavers had a solid hitting effort as they posted nine kills and a .259 team hitting mark.

Whittier won 10 of the first 11 and 17 of the first 19 points in the second set to cruise to a 2-0 lead in the match. With the third set tied at 4-4, Whittier went on a 9-1 scoring spurt to take a 13-5 advantage and never looked back in claiming the match in three sets.

As a team the Poets had 36 kills and a season best .389 team hitting percentage. Lauren Whiteman had a match high 10 kills while posting a .438 attack effort to pace the Poets offense. Alessandra Rios distributed the offense with an evening's best 19 assists.  The visitors also recorded 15 services in the win.

Paige Logan had a team best eight kills and .438 hitting performance for the Beavers.
