LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (May 2, 2019) – Senior Kana Moriyama (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) of the 20th-ranked Caltech women's tennis team has been named First Team All-SCIAC for the third time in as many years and added the Character Award to what has been an increasingly impressive senior season.
A team captain, Moriyama mentored three freshmen to three impressive rookie seasons as they transitioned to the Division III level. Moriyama also proved to be an asset to Head Coach Mandy Gamble and her staff, providing feedback to help improve practice and team culture. The senior is currently playing the best tennis of her career, fresh off winning the Division III women's singles championship at The 119th Ojai Valley Tournament over the weekend. During the regular season, Moriyama posted an overall record of 9-9, with a 6-3 record against conference competition. She was also 11-7 (6-3 vs. the SCIAC) in doubles play with sophomore partner Sarina Liu (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula).
Liu, along with freshman Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) joined their captain in SCIAC recognition with both players being named to Second Team All-SCIAC for the first time in their careers. Tifrea primarily played behind Moriyama at second singles and won 12 regular season matches in her rookie year. Liu also accrued 12 regular season victories and won SCIAC Athlete of the Week back in February.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers are currently preparing for second-seeded Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in the upcoming SCIAC Postseason Tournament on Friday, May 3 at 4 p.m. The third-seeded Beavers took two points from the Sagehens in their previous meeting back in February.
