PASADENA (Mar. 12, 2019) – The 20th-ranked Caltech women's tennis team got back to .500 with another ranked win, this time over No. 33 Vassar College at home on Tuesday afternoon.
Caltech began the day with a pair of doubles wins to set the tone for later that afternoon. Senior Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) and sophomore Sarina Liu (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) won their fourth match of the season together after turning it on late to take down Vassar's top doubles team, 8-4. The duo's four wins as a unit currently lead the team. Freshmen Michelle Hyun (Cerritos, Calif. / Gretchen Whitney) and Jennifer Yu (Queens, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) also won handily, 8-3, at third doubles.
The Beavers kept things rolling in singles competition. Yu remained unbeaten on the season with her seventh win, 6-0, 6-0 blanking at fourth singles. Liu, meanwhile scored a similarly dominant win at fifth singles, 6-0, 6-2, and sophomore Ankita Roychoudhury (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) rallied at sixth singles to put an exclamation point on the Caltech victory, 3-6, 6-2, 10-8. Hyun, along with classmate Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) also picked up solo wins for the Beavers. Caltech freshmen are now a combined 17-5 in singles matches this year.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will get the opportunity to test themselves against No. 16 Bowdoin College on Thursday, Mar. 14.
