PASADENA (Mar. 3, 2019) – The Caltech women's tennis team picked up its third consecutive win -- and third straight over nationally-ranked opponents when they took down No. 24 Christopher Newport University in Sunday's home match.
Freshman Jennifer Yu (Queens, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) remained undefeated in regular-season singles competition when she beat her opponent, 6-4, 6-1 at fourth singles to clinch the match for Caltech. Sophomore Sarina Liu (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) tacked on an additional win at fifth singles, 6-2, 6-3, while sophomore Ankita Roychoudhury (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) and freshman Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) also earned dominant singles wins to help put Caltech over the top. Roychoudhury won her match at sixth singles 6-1, 6-1, while Tifrea defeated the Captains' second-ranked player 6-3, 6-1. Meanwhile, senior Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) put up a great fight against the 20th-ranked player in Division III at first singles, going blow-for-blow but while ultimately falling short 4-6, 4-6.
The Beavers boosted their chances with a successful round of doubles before taking the court for Sunday's series of singles matches. Caltech's top team of Moriyama and Liu won their match, 8-5. Tifrea and Roychoudhury, Caltech's second doubles team, needed to dig deep to win their match but ultimately did so 8-7 (7-2) to stake the Beavers to a 2-1 edge heading into singles action.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers are next set to face off with Rhodes College at home on Tuesday, Mar. 5 at 3 p.m.
