PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 18, 2018) – Led by a winning effort at first doubles, the No. 40 Caltech women's tennis team picked up three victories against co-No. 40 Vassar College on Sunday afternoon.
The Beavers' first double team consisting of junior Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) and freshman Sarina Liu (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) took out the Brewers' top team in a competitive match that needed a tiebreaker to ultimately decide a winner. Though every bit as close as the set, Moriyama and Liu picked up the Beavers' lone doubles win of the day, 9-8 (7-5).
Caltech then managed to pull out two singles wins against the visitors. Senior Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) won at fourth singles, 7-5, 6-1, and freshman Ankita Roychoudhury (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) won at fifth singles, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1). Wang leads the Beavers in 2018 with four singles wins, three of which have come out of her usual spot at fourth singles.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will play theire next three matches in Texas, beginning on Thursday, Mar. 22 when they take on Austin College at 2:00 p.m. PT.
