PASADENA (Apr. 14, 2017) – Playing in the final home match of her career, senior Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) went out on top without dropping a single game in either doubles or singles as No. 40 Caltech women's tennis swept Chapman University, 9-0, on Friday afternoon.
Chen teamed with freshman Alexandra Bodrova (Russia / Kurchatovskaya School) for the first time at #3 doubles and recorded one of two 8-0 victories as the Beavers took the 3-0 lead. Rookie Angelica Zhou (Temple City, Calif. / Arcadia) and sophomore Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) cruised to the 8-0 win at #2 while junior Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) and sophomore Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) paired up again after going 6-5 together last year to the tune of an 8-4 victory.
The Beavers went on to win every set in singles, with Wang providing the clinching point at #4 after Zhou's opponent retired just one game into their match at #2. Chen posted the only 6-0, 6-0 score for Caltech at #5, while Reisler won at #3 (6-2, 6-0), junior Vinci Chen (Austin, Texas / Westwood) dominated at #6 (6-1, 6-1) and Moriyama out-lasted her foe at the top spot, 6-0, 7-5.
