TYLER, Texas (Mar. 24, 2016) – A trio of Beavers swept both doubles and singles to post the Caltech women's tennis team's fourth straight victory, 6-3 over Texas Lutheran University on Thursday morning.
The Beavers are now 5-4 on the season and 5-1 against unranked NCAA opposition.
Freshmen Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) and Cecelia Andrews (Orinda, Calif. / Miramonte) made short work of their opponents at #3 doubles, winning 8-3 for the Beavers' first point of the day. TLU quickly followed with an 8-4 victory at #1, but freshman Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) and sophomore Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) came out on top at #2, 8-6, to give the Beavers the 2-1 match lead.
Reisler notched the first singles point at #2 (6-1, 6-3), but the hosts canceled that out with an unblemished win at #1 to stay within a point. Moriyama brought Caltech within one of clinching the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #3 and Wang sealed the victory, 6-4, 6-2, at #5 for the second straight match.
Fortunately for both junior Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) and Andrews, Wang's victory made a third set unnecessary, with the foes at #4 and #6 instead playing a superbreaker after splitting the first two sets. Chen carried the momentum from her second set win to a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 10-7 victory while Andrews was on the other end of a similar score line, 6-7 (6), 6-1, 10-7.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers face LeTourneau University (4-9) on Friday, Mar. 25.
