THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Feb. 12, 2016) – The Caltech women's tennis team came up just short in a pair of superbreakers in the SCIAC opener at regional No. 11 Cal Lutheran University on Friday afternoon.
Caltech drops to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the SCIAC while CLU is now 2-1 (1-1).
Caltech was swept in doubles, although the #3 duo of freshmen Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) and Cecelia Andrews (Orinda, Calif. / Miramonte) took five games in an 8-5 defeat. CLU made short work of #1 and #6 singles to clinch the match, but the Beavers made a real battle of it at #3-5. Andrews took the first set at #5, 6-3, but dropped the second, 6-1, while Reisler went behind 6-3 at #3 and sophomore Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) was blanked, 6-0, at #4. Reisler and Wang stormed back in the second, however, as Reisler came up just short at #3, 7-5, while Wang flipped that score to force a superbreaker. Both Beavers would fall, but Wang fought right to the end at 10-7 before CLU could notch the 9-0 victory.
