PASADENA, Calif. (Apr. 28, 2015) – Freshman Grace Yao (La Palma, Calif. / Oxford Acad.) won at both doubles and singles for the fifth time this spring as the Caltech women's tennis team's 2015 season came to a close in a 6-3 loss to Occidental College in the SCIAC Championships Play-in Game on Tuesday.
The Tigers picked up the first points of the match with an 8-1 victory at #3 doubles and 8-2 edge at the top spot, but Yao and freshman Vinci Chen (Austin, Texas / Westwood) pulled one back for Caltech with an 8-3 win at #2.
Oxy took quick leads at the top two singles courts while freshman Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) went up by a break at #4 and the other three courts stayed on serve early. Yao evened the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at #3, but the Tigers would clinch the match with wins at #1,2,5 and 6 singles in quick succession. Wang salvaged another point for the Beavers with a 6-3, 6-2 win.
Caltech overcame a thin squad despite its lack of collegiate experience this season. Yao led the team with a 9-8 overall record, while Wang matched her win total at 9-9, including a team-best four victories in SCIAC play. Both doubles teams of Yao/Vinci Chen and Wang/Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) recorded five wins this spring, with the Yao/Vinci pairing earning a team-high three in the SCIAC. With five freshmen in the regular rotation and the entire team returning next season, the future is undoubtedly bright for the Beavers.
