PASADENA, Calif. (Apr. 18, 2015) – Freshman Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) rallied from a first-set defeat to win #4 singles in an extended superbreaker for the Caltech women's tennis team's lone victory against Cal Lutheran University in the Beavers' regular season finale on Saturday morning.
The Beavers finish conference play with a 1-7 record (6-10 overall) and will host Occidental College on Apr. 28 in a play-in game for the right to join the SCIAC Championships field. Cal Lutheran is now 9-8 (3-5) and enters the SCIAC Championships as the #6 seed.
Wang and sophomore Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) provided a tough test for CLU's #1 doubles pairing, narrowly falling 9-7, while freshmen Grace Yao (La Palma, Calif. / Oxford Acad.) and Vinci Chen (Austin, Texas / Westwood) battled to an 8-4 defeat at #2 and CLU completed the sweep at court #3.
Every Beaver took at least one game in singles play, with Yao dropping identical 6-3 sets in the #3 spot and Sophia Chen taking four games in the top slot. Wang stole the show at #4 after dropping her first set, 6-2. The rookie fought back to win the second set, 7-5, and in epic fashion put the Beavers on the board with a 12-10 superbreaker victory.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble will lead the Beavers as they participate in the Ojai Valley Tournament this weekend.
