Yao, Morton Propel Women's Tennis to First SCIAC Victory at Oxy

LOS ANGELES (Apr. 4, 2015) – Freshmen Grace Yao (La Palma, Calif. / Oxford Acad.) and Rachel Morton (Oxford, Ohio / Talawanda) won in both doubles and singles to propel the Caltech women's tennis team to its first SCIAC win of the season in a 6-3 victory over Occidental College on Saturday morning.

Box Score

Yao's victory was her team-leading eighth of the season, while Morton picked up her second straight and has now won four of her last six matches.

Caltech led 2-1 after doubles and swept the bottom four singles spots to claim the victory, improving to 6-8 overall and 1-5 in the SCIAC while Oxy falls to 1-12 (0-6).

Each team picked up a quick victory in doubles as #1 and #2 were both decided by 8-1 scores, with Yao and freshman Vinci Chen (Austin, Texas / Westwood) claiming #2.  Morton and freshman Sarah Antilla (Redondo Beach, Calif. / Redondo Union) found themselves locked in a battle at #3, but pulled out the 8-5 victory to hand the Beavers the edge heading into singles.

Yao and Morton locked up their matches at #3 and #5 singles in quick fashion, with both dropping just a single game to bring Caltech one point away from the overall victory.  Oxy bounced back briefly with a pair of 6-0, 6-2 wins at the top two spots, but freshman Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) closed it out with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #4 to clinch.  Despite already having the match in hand, sophomore Katie Antilla (Redondo Beach, Calif. / Redondo Union) continued to fight through a grueling matchup at court #6.  After a 6-4 first set, Antilla came up just short in the second, 7-5, to head into a superbreaker, where she came out on top, 10-7, for her third career victory.

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will host No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (15-1, 4-0) in their penultimate match of the regular season on Saturday, Apr. 11 at 2:00 p.m.
