PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 27, 2015) – Freshmen Vinci Chen (Austin, Texas / Westwood)and Grace Yao (La Palma, Calif. / Oxford Acad.) upset the No. 14-ranked doubles team in the West region as the Caltech women's tennis team hosted SCIAC foe No. 33 Chapman University on Friday afternoon.
The shorthanded Beavers defaulted two points to the visiting Panthers, eventually going down 8-1. Caltech is now 5-7 overall and 0-4 in the SCIAC while Chapman improves to 7-5 (2-0).
Although Chapman took a quick 2-0 lead with an 8-1 victory at #1 doubles, Chen and Yao picked up an early break and finished things out with another to record the 8-3 win at #2.
The Panthers swept singles in straight sets behind quick victories from their pair of regionally ranked players at #2 and #3. Chen held her own at #1 in a 6-4, 6-1 defeat, and as Chapman was ready to head out with the win, freshman Rachel Morton (Oxford, Ohio / Talawanda) staged a final push for the Beavers. Having fallen behind 4-1 in the second set, the rookie rallied to take the next three games, including scoring seven straight points, and get back on serve. She held on to force a deuce in the final game and fought off a match point before finally succumbing, 6-3, 6-4.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will take a well-earned respite before heading to the University of La Verne (8-4, 2-1) on Friday, Apr. 3.
