PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 25, 2015) – Freshman Grace Yao (La Palma, Calif. / Oxford Acad.) won at both doubles and singles as the Caltech women's tennis team rallied in singles play to top Willamette University, 6-3, on Wednesday afternoon.
Caltech trailed 2-1 after doubles but won at the #2-6 singles spots to claim the victory, improving to 5-6 overall while Willamette drops to 1-9.
The Bearcats opened up a 2-0 lead with wins at #1 and #3 doubles to start the match, but Yao and freshman Vinci Chen (Austin, Texas / Westwood) held firm at #2 and picked up a point for the Beavers with an 8-6 victory. Caltech leveled the score early in singles as Willamette's #2 retired after dropping the first set to sophomore Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar). Yao gave the Beavers the lead with an expedient 6-1, 6-0 decision for her first win at #3 and fourth straight overall.
Willamette tied things back up with a win at #1, but freshman Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) responded immediately, closing out her match at #4 (6-2, 6-2) to bring the Beavers within a point of taking the matchup. Freshman Rachel Morton (Oxford, Ohio / Talawanda) tallied the clinching point at #5 for the second time in three matches with a 7-5, 6-3 win. Sophomore Katie Antilla (Redondo Beach, Calif. / Redondo Union) closed out the day with a marathon battle at #6 as she dug deep in the third set to pull out the final five straight games in the 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory – her first of the season.
