PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 23, 2015) – Freshmen Rachel Morton (Oxford, Ohio / Talawanda) and Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) won twice apiece, with Morton getting the clincher at #5 singles, to carry the Caltech women's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over West Region No. 19 Pacific (Ore.) University on Monday.
The Beavers improve to 4-5 overall with their first win over a regionally ranked opponent this season, while Pacific drops to 3-6.
Pacific split its No. 11 regionally ranked doubles pairing of Kaitlyn Lomartire and Jelena Vidovic, both of whom are also ranked individually in singles, leaving the door open for Wang and sophomore Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) at #1. The Beaver duo took full advantage, pulling away to win the final five games for the 8-2 victory and staking Caltech to a 1-0 lead. Pacific picked up the point at #2 but Morton and freshman Sarah Antilla (Redondo Beach, Calif. / Redondo Union) rallied to take #3 doubles, 8-6, handing the Beavers a crucial 2-1 lead.
The Boxers quickly tied the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #2 singles, but Wang responded immediately with her own sweep at #3 to regain the lead. Chen battled hard at the top spot against the region's No. 22-ranked player in Vidovic, eventually falling 6-2, 6-3, but again the Beavers had an answer in freshman Grace Yao (La Palma, Calif. / Oxford Acad.), who cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory at #4 to bring Caltech within one point of clinching.
Pacific tied the match for a fourth time with a win at #6 singles, leaving it all in Morton's hands at #5. After winning a tight first set, 6-4, the rookie found herself trailing 0-3 in the second but fought back to win the final six straight games and give the Beavers the victory.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will continue their Spring Break slate against RPI (3-4) on Tuesday, Mar. 24 at 1:00 p.m.
