PASADENA, Calif. (Feb. 7, 2015) – Junior Monica Li (Boulder, Colo. / Fairview) and freshman Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) won both their doubles and singles matches to lead the Caltech women's tennis team to a season-opening 6-2 victory over Biola University for the fourth consecutive year on Saturday.
Li and freshman Sarah Cai (Livermore, Calif. / West Lafeyette Jr./Sr.) opened the day with an 8-3 win at #1 doubles, but Biola picked up an 8-4 win at #2 to even the match. Sophomore Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) and freshman Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) outlasted their foes at #3 doubles, 8-6, to take a 2-1 lead into the singles matches.
Li quickly dispensed with her opponent at #1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, but again Biola was not far behind in matching, winning 6-2, 6-1 at #3. Freshman Grace Yao (La Palma, Calif. / Oxford Acad.) battled through a tough first set to take her match at #4, 6-4, 6-1, and freshman Rachel Morton (Oxford, Ohio / Talawanda), a late addition to the lineup at #6 singles, clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
With the match already in hand, Wang finished things off at #5 singles in a 6-0, 7-5 victory, while Cai was deep into a superbreaker when the match had to be called due to rain.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will look to carry the momentum into the weekend as they host Hope International University on Friday, Feb. 13 at 3 p.m. before opening SCIAC play at Whittier College on Saturday, Feb. 14.
