2013 Tennis SCIAC Championships

PASADENA, CA – The Caltech tennis team enter the final weekend of the season at the SCIAC championships.

Both the men’s and women’s team will be in competition beginning on Friday morning with play concluding on Saturday. Each team will play three matches during the two day events.

The men’s tournament is being hosted by Whittier College while the University of La Verne is hosting the women’s competition.

Rebekah Kitto’s record breaking season will come to a close this weekend. The junior has already set the school record for most dual match wins in a season with 17. She enters the league championships without a loss in dual matches. Her only loss came at the Ojai Tournament last weekend when she lost in the quarterfinal round.

Monica Li has had a stellar season playing both No. 1 and No. 2 singles. The first-year has tallied an 11-7 record in dual matches and is currently ranked 17th in the west region according the most recently ITA rankings.

The Beavers open the championships against the ClaremontMuddScripps who comes into the event ranked as the No. 2 team in the nation. In addition to the Athenas national ranking, the SCIAC features three others teams (Redlands – 9th, Pomona-Pitzer – 14th, La Verne – 29th) ranked in the country.

A pair of first-year players have enjoy success. Rushikesh Joshi and Alex Henny have won six and four matches respectively. Joshi is tied with junior Luka Mernik for the most singles win on the team.

Mernik and teamed with Devashish Joshi at the No. 1 double spot in each of the team’s 18 dual matches.

The Beavers begin the event against the top ranked ClaremontMuddScripps. It will be the seventh time this season Caltech has played a team ranked in the nation’s top 25. The SCIAC features five teams (CMS, Cal Lutheran – 4th, Redlands -12th, Whittier -19th, Pomona-Pitzer – 22nd) ranked among the nation’s best.
