OJAI, CA – Three members of the Caltech women's tennis team participated in the singles tournament at the 113th Annual Ojai Valley Classic.
The 30-person field featured players from the NCAA and NAIA schools throughout the state of California.
Rebekah Kitto earned the seventh seed for the event. The junior started the event by knocking off Yvonne Likomanova from ClaremontMuddScripps 6-1, 6-4. In her round of 16 match against Caroline Houston of Hope International, Kitto recorded another straight sets win. She took the first set 6-4 then tallied a 7-5 second set win in advancing to the quarterfinal round.
Her run in the tournament came to an end against Ariana Mokhtari of UC Santa Cruz 6-1, 6-2 in the round of eight. Mokhtari came into the event as the second seed.
Monica Li won her opening round match against Jeanette Losaria 6-4,6 -4 from La Verne. The first-year then had a re-match with Whittier's Meagan Zamilpa. Earlier this season Zamilpa dropped just one game in beating Li but a much more competitive match ensued on Thursday. Li dropped the first set to the fourth seed 6-4 but rebounded with a 6-3 second win. In the decisive third set Zamilpa did enough to prevail 6-2.
Stephanie Kwan also competed in the event but the senior fell in her opening round match to Alexandra Scotten from UC Santa Cruz 6-1, 6-2.
During doubles play the duo of Li and Kitto advanced to the round of eight. They entered the event as the sixth seed and recieved a bye in the first round. During their second round match against Houston and Rebecca Roser they posted a 6-2, 6-1 win as they advanced to the quarterfinals. They fell to the fourth seeded tandem of Natalie Etchegaray and Julia Pollak from Redlands 6-4, 6-1.
Jessica Yu and Stephanie Kwan also participated in the double competition. The duo lost their first round match to Kathryn Ashford and Susan Carmichael from Biola 6-1, 6-3.
