AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (Jan. 12, 2019) – The Caltech women's fencing team got some key individual performances and nearly came up on the winning end of several weapons at last weekend's Western Invitational.
Caltech picked up seven wins against the University of Incarnate Word, including three at foil thanks to freshman Polina Verkhovodova (Portland, Ore. / Portland Community College) and junior Mei-Ling Laures (Chicago, Ill. / British International School of Chicago). Freshman Cecilia Zhang (San Diego, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) also picked up a victory at saber. Verkhovodova proceeded to go 3-for-3 against the University of Florida while Zhang got Caltech's lone win at saber. Verkhovodova capped the weekend with two wins against Brandeis University and one of the Beavers' two foils wins against Stanford University. Caltech also got its strongest showing out of its epee fencers against the Cardinal, with Lin Lee (Seattle, Wash. / The Hockaday School) and Sofia Kwok (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) leading the way with three total victories.
Head Coach Carla Corbit and the Beavers will hit the road again on Saturday, Feb. 2 when they travel to the Northwestern Duals.
