HOBOKEN, N.J. (Jan. 20, 2018) Led by returners Betty Wang, Mei-Ling Laures and a host of newcomers, the Caltech women's fencing team pulled out three outright victories at the Stevens University-hosted Stevens Invitational this past weekend.
The foil squad shined particularly well, picking up 6-3 victories in each of the team's victories. Freshman Laura Hu had seven total wins on the day, six of which came against NCAA teams, while Laures picked up three NCAA wins in her 2018 debut. Fellow foilists, freshman Isabella Camplisson and junior newcomer Lyn Li also picked up wins throughout the day for their team. Meanwhile, the day held first career victories for the likes of freshmen June Kim and Erika Yu when they helped the Beavers to a 14-12 outright victory over the City College of New York. Yu also picked up one of the Beavers' three victories against The United States Military Academy.
The men's epee squad entered the day having to compete shorthanded but senior Ethan Lo and freshman Zimo Zhu made the most of their experience with three victories, the last of which came in dominant fashion over Army (8-1). Sabrists sophomore Jim Zhang and junior Aaron Shih also stepped up and led the men to a 6-3 victory over Hunter College, picking up multiple wins along the way. The foil squad also came through on the men's side with a 5-4 victory over Hunter.
Head Coach Carla Corbit and the Beavers will next head to South Bend, Ind. the first weekend of February for the Northwestern Duals.
