Women's Basketball Sets Career Marks at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. (Jan. 2, 2017) – Sophomore guards Samantha D'Costa (San Jose, Calif. / St. Francis) and Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California) both set single-game career high marks when the women's basketball team took on first-place Chapman University on New Year's Day.

D'Costa shot 50-percent from the field en route to a 20-point performance, but also picked up seven steals, her highest single-game total since joining the team last year. Peng, meanwhile utilized her quickness to corral 10 rebounds for the first time in her career to lead all Beavers. Peng also shared the ball particularly well, boosting her teammates with five assists. The backcourt duo also combined to go 9-for-11 from the free throw line to help the visitors to an 82-percent day on free-throw shooting. Junior guard Nika Haleftiras (San Diego, Calif. / Our Lady of Peace) did her part with a 4-for-4 day from the line and 17 points while playing the entire game.

Traditionally fast starters and strong finishers this season, this time the Beavers resorted to a dominant third quarter against the a Panthers team returning their entire starting lineup from a year ago. Junior center Elizabeth Eiden (White Plains, N.Y. / Holy Child) scored eight of her 12 points in the third frame to help Caltech outscore Chapman 17-10. The Beavers, who outscored the Panthers 32-28 off turnovers in a giveaway-laden game took a safer defensive approach and held the home team to 25-percent shooting and ourebounded their opponents 10-7. D'Costa picked up three of her five rebounds during this time. With momentum from a hot third period, the Beavers entered the final frame down by just four points, but the home team's experience helped them pull through as the Beavers succumbed to superior numbers on this particular occasion.

Head Coach Bridgette Reyes and the Beavers will continue on to the second of a three-game road stint when they meet Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (2-9, 0-3 SCIAC) in Claremont, Calif. on Wednesday, Jan. 3.
