PASADENA, Calif. (Feb. 20, 2016) – Senior Stephanie Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) scored a team-high 21 points on her Senior Night as Caltech women's basketball fell to Chapman University, 74-46, on Saturday night.
This was Wong's final home game at the Braun Athletic Center, capping a portion of an historic career and senior season. She ranks third in the SCIAC in points per game (13.2), fourth in points scored this season (317) and 10th in three-point percentage (32.2). She has made 64 three-pointers so far this season, ranking among the top 15 in the entire nation, and is just two treys shy of tying her own single-season record. She is also already the career points leader, with 1,319, and three-point leader, with 227.
The Beavers came out sluggish on offense, scoring only seven points in the first quarter against the second-ranked Panthers. Despite the slow start, Caltech trailed by just seven and, in the second quarter, freshman Madeline Schemel (Westport, Conn./Staples) netted six of the Beavers' 11 points. The Panthers came out hot in the second quarter, however, shooting 50 percent from three and extending the lead to 17 at the half.
Wong laid claim to the second half as she came out blazing, scoring 18 points on 50 percent shooting from long range and 64 percent from the field. Unfortunately, for the Beavers, her phenomenal second half was not enough to catch the Panthers, who pulled away to claim the 28-point victory.
Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers will close out the season at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (10-14, 7-8) on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.
