PASADENA, Calif. (Feb. 6, 2016) – Junior Michelle Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) recorded her second straight game with 10-plus points and five-plus assists as Caltech women's basketball fell to Cal Lutheran, 70-48, on Saturday night.
The Beavers were outrebounded by 10 and turned the ball over 22 times to fall to 2-18 (0-11) as the Regals improve to 16-5 overall and 10-2 in SCIAC play.
The Beavers came out strong, trailing the second-ranked Regals by only eight points at the end of the first quarter. The Beavers' thin rotation showed in the second quarter as the Regals posted a 10-point advantage and had an 18-point lead at the half.
Caltech came out of the half rejuvenated, scoring a game-high 18 points in the third quarter as junior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) poured in eight of her 14 points. The offensive outburst unfortunately did not translate to the defensive end, as the Regals also scored 18 points and recorded a 13-9 fourth quarter to claim the victory.
Freshman Madeline Schemel (Westport, Conn. / Staples) scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds while Lewis scored 14 points and picked up six boards. Wong recorded a season-high four steals as well.
Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers will travel to the University of Redlands (8-11, 5-5) to take on the Bulldogs on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 7:30pm.
