PASADENA, Calif. (July 13, 2015) – The Caltech women's basketball team has revealed its 2015-16 schedule, which includes 13 home games and a Winter Break trip to Minnesota.
Caltech opens the season at home riding a two-game home win streak with the first of seven straight home games against Linfield College on Wednesday, Nov. 25 at 5 p.m. Sophomore Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) notched her first double-double of the season with a second straight 24-point performance in last year's home opener, Caltech's third game of the season.
The Beavers then host the Illinois Institute of Technology in Pasadena and UC Merced in Eagle Rock for the Caltech-Occidental Fall Classic on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 27 and 28. Caltech held a three-point lead over UC Merced before the Bobcats staged a furious second-half rally to win by 16 in last year's tournament.
Head Coach Sandra Marbut's squad welcomes two regional foes in UC Santa Cruz and Willamette University along with La Sierra University in the week leading up to the Winter recess. The Banana Slugs arrive in Pasadena for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff on Tuesday, Dec. 15, followed by the Bearcats on Friday, Dec. 18, with the Golden Eagles suiting up on Sunday, Dec. 20.
Between Christmas and New Year's Day, the Beavers will fly to St. Bonifacius, Minn., just outside of Minneapolis, for a two-game set at Crown College. Caltech will face the Storm on Tuesday, Dec. 29 and square off against Crossroads College, which makes the trip northwest from Rochester, Minn., on Wednesday, Dec. 30. The Beavers won the most recent matchup with Crown in 2013-14 as part of the Caltech-Occidental Fall Classic, with Lewis posting her first career double-double in a dominant 16-point, 16-rebound, four-steal effort. Please note that the time for both games will be listed in Central time (+2 hours from Pacific).
Caltech will have one final tune-up prior to beginning the winter term and conference play, as the Beavers head to La Sierra two weeks after their first meeting on Saturday, Jan. 2. SCIAC play then begins in earnest as runner-up Cal Lutheran University (19-8, 13-3) hosts the Beavers on Tuesday, Jan. 5. Caltech faces fourth-place University of Redlands (12-14, 9-7) two days later on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 7:30 p.m. and turns right back after another two days to take on Occidental College (4-21, 2-14) on Saturday, Jan. 9. The Beavers took down Oxy, 72-61, in the second of their back-to-back SCIAC wins last season as junior Stephanie Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) poured in 31 points, breaking the single-game three-point record (seven) and 1,000-point mark for her career in the process.
SCIAC champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (24-4, 16-0) and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (6-19, 5-11) come to Pasadena for back-to-back matchups on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. The Beavers then hit the road for a pair of games at third-place Chapman University (13-13, 10-6) on Tuesday, Jan. 19 and the University of La Verne on Saturday, Jan. 23. The Beavers picked up their first SCIAC win since 2009-10 over the Leopards this past February, 59-58, with Lewis and Wong netting a combined 40 points. Caltech closes out the first round of conference play hosting Whittier College (12-12, 8-8) on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m. commences the second led at CMS on Saturday, Jan. 30.
The Beavers alternate two home and two away games over the following three weeks, hosting Oxy on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Cal Lu on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. Redlands and Whittier welcome Caltech on Thursday, Feb. 11 and Saturday, Feb. 13, with La Verne and Chapman coming to the Braun Athletic Center on Tuesday, Feb. 16 and Saturday, Feb. 20. The regular season concludes at Pomona-Pitzer on Tuesday, Feb. 23, with the SCIAC Post-Season Tournament set for that weekend.
