PASADENA, Calif. (Jan. 14, 2015) – Sophomore Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) posted her sixth 20-point game of the season and just missed a fifth double-double as the Caltech women's basketball team hosted California Lutheran University on Wednesday night.
The Regals stormed out to a 12-0 lead over the first four minutes and never looked back, extending the margin to a high of 35 before leaving with a 79-50 victory. Cal Lutheran improves to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in the SCIAC while Caltech is 0-15 (0-6).
After jumping out to the quick lead, Cal Lutheran held the double-digit margin over the next four minutes until junior Stephanie Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) keyed a 6-2 run to pull Caltech back within single digits for the following three minutes. The Regals rattled off eight straight points in just under a minute on their next four possessions, however, to regain their breathing room and built on their lead until midway through the second half. The Beavers would eventually lock down on defense to hold Cal Lutheran scoreless over four minutes and post a 14-5 run late in the game, but could not get any closer than 26 points.
Lewis notched 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to fall just shy of her fifth double-double, but added two steals, one assist and a block in a typical all-around effort. Wong poured in 18 points behind a trio of three-pointers, including a third near-buzzer-beater of the year to end the first half, while her sister Michelle Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) chipped in eight points, five rebounds and team highs in assists (three) and steals (four).
Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers will return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 20 as they host SCIAC foe Chapman University (5-7, 3-1) at 5:00 p.m. preceding the same men's matchup.
