Wong Named to All-Conference Team

PASADENA, CA – First-Year Stephanie Wong was named to the SCIAC's second-team all-conference team on Tuesday afternoon. The honor is voted on by the league's nine head coaches.

Wong is the fifth Caltech women's basketball player to earn all-conference accolades. She joins Rene Davis, Lindsay King, Teri Juarez and Lisa Yee as Beaver players who have recognized by the SCIAC.

"Stephanie has been a great contributor for us in her first year, and for me this establishes for our program that we are moving in a positive and improved direction. For Stephanie to earn the recognition and votes to be seen as a standout in SCIAC in her first year speaks volumes for the progress our program has made," said 10th year head coach Sandra Marbut, " It is a recognition that while we may have different challenges in our journey to competitiveness, we do have collegiate players who are worthy of best in conference honors."

The native of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA was the squads leading scorer all season. Wong was the top scorer for Caltech in 18 of their 25 games en route to averaging 15 points per game. In the Beavers 16 SCAIC games, she averaged 14.4 points a game; the sixth best mark in the league. In addition, she ranked in the league top 10 in three-pointer made (First – 2.6 3fgm/game) and steals per game (Ninth – 1.9 spg).

"I feel like this honor is really for the entire team," Wong said. "That fact that I was recognized means that other people are taking notice of our improvement and are realizing that we could be a competitive team in the near future. Which is really cool."

During the season she set two Caltech single season scoring records. Her 374 points surpassed Adu Yu's record of 365 point set 10 seasons ago while her 66 three-pointer topped King's mark of 38 set during the 2004-05 season.

Marbut concluded, "She is a great player who has raised our level of competitiveness.  That has not come in a bubble.  For every great player there is a great team functioning to everyone's benefit.  We have said all season that everyone has great opportunities when Stephanie does well.  She makes everyone better and the entire team makes her work harder to continue helping our group progress.  This is a great honor for Stephanie, her teammates, and everyone who has worn a Caltech jersey."
