THOUSAND OAKS, CA – In their SCIAC road opener, the Caltech women's basketball team couldn't overcome a solid low post presence and a good shooting effort from Cal Lutheran in a 80-41 loss on Saturday night.
Cal Lutheran had a plus-17 rebounding margin which helped them hold a 34-2 edge in points in the paint. The defending SCIAC tournament champions also nailed half of their 18 three-point attempts to aid in the victory.
The Regals broke open the game just before the halfway point of the opening frame. Leading 12-10 with 13:06 left until intermission, the home squad went on a 24-6 scoring spree over the next 10 minutes. Cal Lutheran was able to push their lead a bit more just before halftime as they took a 42-19 advantage in the locker room.
Cal Lutheran continued their solid play in the second half. The home team hit 50 percent of their second stanza shots (13-of-26) to help them pull away for the win.
Five different players scored in double figures for Cal Lutheran led by Jazmyne Porter's 18-point effort off the bench.
Stephanie Wong continues to be a bright spot for the Beavers through the early portion of the schedule. The first-year scored a game high 20 points while swiping six steals in 34 minutes of action. Wong has scored in double figures in three of the four games this season.
Another first-year for Caltech, Grace Leishman, swatted away a game high three shots.
Caltech returns to non-conference play for the remainder of the month. The Beavers host Bethesda Christian on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
