PASADENA, Calif. – A solid defensive effort helped Marietta (Ohio) to a 75-41 victory over Caltech in a non-conference women's basketball match-up at the Braun Athletic Center on Thursday evening.
Marietta (5-6) held the Beavers to a 14-for-47 shooting performance (29.8 percent) while forcing the home squad into 34 turnovers en route to the win. The Pioneers held a 35-9 edge in points off of turnovers.
The Pioneers scored the first nine points of the game less than three minutes into the contest. Caltech (0-10) fought back and got their deficit down to 13-10 after a Krissy Dahl lay-up with 10:30 remaining in the first half. Marietta was able to regain momentum by finishing the half on an 18-4 scoring run as they took a 31-14 lead into halftime.
Early in the second half the teams traded baskets. After Paige Logan hit the back-end of two free throw attempts to get Caltech's deficit down to 14 points at 42-28. Marietta proceeded to put the game away by scoring 22 of the game's next 28 points.
Logan was a bright spot for the Beavers as she posted her third double-double of the season with an 11-point, 14-rebound effort. Erin Hoops scored 10 points to round out the double digit scorers for Caltech.
Aleisha Guiler recorded a game-high 13 points in 30 minutes of action for Marietta.
