FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Feb. 19, 2016) – Senior Morgan Hill (San Diego, Calif. / Wasatch Acad.) experienced a major breakthrough facing off against multiple Division I and II competitors in the indoor weight throw at the North Arizona University Tune Up on Friday.
The veteran overcome a disappointing first throw and foul on his second to come through in the clutch on his final attempt, clearing 11.76 meters to qualify for finals. He built on that momentum with another toss of 11.74 meters, then exploded for huge throws of 12.34 and 12.49 meters even at the end of a long, taxing competition.
"This was a great step forward for Morgan as a competitor," Head Coach Ben Raphelson said. "The goal of the trip was to help him continue his development as one of the top throwers in school history. He found himself in a challenging situation, down to his final throw, against some very talented throwers, and he was able to not just persevere but absolutely thrive."
Hill then competed at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers Meet the next day despite only arriving back in California hours earlier following an early-morning flight and still managed to better his mark at last year's meet by roughly one meter.
Raphelson, Hill and the rest of the Beavers will head back to Claremont for the 20th Annual Rossi Relays at CMS on Saturday, Feb. 27.
