REDLANDS, Calif. - The University of Redlands is hosting the 2012 SCIAC Championships on Friday and Saturday. Teams and Individuals will be competing for records and championships in the 97th annual SCIAC Championship.
Caltech has numerous athletes competing for all-conference honors at the tournament. junior Brice Nzeukou has a chance to earn such honors in both the javelin and high jump. Brice threw 161'7 1/4" in the Javelin at his last meet, which was less than 10 inches away from the school record set 14 years ago. Brice also has a personal best of 5'9" in the high hump, up among the SCIAC leaders.
Coach Julie Levesque says that freshman Ben Grabowski, "has a shot at the Javelin school record, he has been throwing that distance in practice." Fellow first year Eric Martin's best time of 1:51.37 in the 800 meters also puts him in the discussion for All-Conference honors.
Alan Menezes has been running well in the 1500 meters. His best time on the year has been a blistering 4:11.44, putting him among the conference leaders.
Senior Jessica Swallow has been jumping out of her shoes this season. She has posted top marks of 5'1 4/5" in the high jump and 34'0 3/10" in the Triple Jump. She is actually nearing school records in both marks as she is less than three inches shy of the school high jump record and 11 inches short of the Triple Jump record.
Sarah Wright also has a chance at all-conference in two separate events. The junior has posted a 17.84 100 meter hurdles time and has thrown the Javelin 104' 3 1/5" both tops on the Beaver team.
Paige Logan set the school record for shot put at last year's SCIAC Championship meet at Pomona-Pitzer. Her best mark this year of 36'2 3/5" is not quite up to her record of 38'11 1/4" set last year. However, the sophomore is always capable of rewriting the record book with her throws.
Coach Kim DePrez, the assistant coach in charge of jumps, is leaving after the season and Head Coach Julie Levesque attributes the recent success of jumpers to the great work that Kim has done with the student-athletes.
Caltech will have a recap of the event with photos and results after the completition of the event.
