Track & Field Has Good Performances During First SCIAC Meet

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In the first SCIAC quad meet of the season; the Caltech track and field squad posted first place finishes as well as post marks that landed athletes in the schools top 10.

The event started well for the Beavers as Paige Logan stepped into the record books with a throw of 36'7 3/4" in the shot put. The freshman's throw tops Rebekah Mills' school record of 35'8 1/4" set in 1994. Logan's throw placed her second overall in the meet. In addition to her shot put efforts, Logan threw 112" in the discus which is the second best throw in Caltech history. Logan also placed second in that event on Saturday as well.

"What a great way for Paige to start off her college track and field career by setting a school record in her first meet of the season," head coach Julie Levesque said.

During the women's 4x100 meter relay, the Caltech foursome of Carrie Wang, Sarah Wright, Mia Oviatt and Deboki Chakravarti posted a first place finish with a time of 54.12.

"That's the first time I can recall a Caltech women's relay team winning an event against a SCIAC school. That's a great victory for those women," Levesque said.

Jessica Swallow performed well in two field events. The junior finished second in the high jump (4'11 3/4") and triple jump (33' 2"). Swallow's high jump effort is her personal best and is the fourth best in school history.

On the men's side of the meet Alex Lapides won the high jump by clearing 6'1 1/2" to edge out Kyle Smith of Redlands by less than a quarter-inch.

The event was hosted by Occidental College.
