WHITTIER, Calif. (Oct. 19, 2019) – The Caltech men's water polo team improved on its previous outing by scoring eight goals at Whittier College on Saturday afternoon.
Senior center Steven Csaposs (Davis, Calif. / Davis) keyed a strong start for the Beavers by scoring three of his four goals in the first period, the last of which came on a successful five-meter penalty shot with 13 seconds to go. Following the first eight minutes, the Beavers trailed the Poets by just one goal. From there, the home team made adjustments that held Caltech to just two goals over the middle two periods.
Csaposs, along with senior goalkeeper Bradley Justice (El Cajon, Calif. / Grossmont) dominated the defensive stats with the former player coming up with four steals while the latter player made nine saves over three-quarters of the 32-minute game. Sophomore Alex Wang (Saratoga, Calif. / The Harker School), meanwhile potted two fourth-quarter goals while classmate Neil Sanderson (Laguna Beach, Calif. / Winchester) and freshman Matthew Hajjar (San Jose, Calif. / The Harker School) joined him on the scoresheet. Additionally, freshman Max Bricken (Portland, Ore. / Westview) contributed some great two-meter defense and assisted on multiple Caltech goals.
"Our frosh are a really good group of student-athletes," Head Coach Jon Bonafede said. "They are calm and skilled and it's been great to see them continue to grow with the rest of our team."
Bonafede and the Beavers will remain on the road for their next contest, scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 23 at Chapman University.
