PASADENA (Nov. 3, 2018) – The Caltech men's water polo team carried some of the momentum from Wednesday's SCIAC victory over La Verne into Saturday's clash with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, hanging with the Stags to draw a 12-10 result on Saturday afternoon.
Senior goalkeeper Shaurya Gilani (Chicago, Ill. / Adlai Stevenson) measured up to his Halloween performance against the Leopards with another double-digit save effort, this time stopping 11 CMS shots to give his team a chance to win in the game's final few minutes. Caltech rebounded from a tough first period to outscore its opponent, 5-3, in the second frame, providing plenty of reason for optimism. The Beavers would outscore the Stags again with a 2-1 fourth quarter but ultimately ran out of time to tie the game, trailing by one goal with six minutes to play in regulation.
Senior Eshan Govil (Redwood City, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) and sophomore Steven Csaposs led the Caltech offense with five points apiece. Csaposs' four goals led all players, while Govil picked up two goals and three assists, setting the table for his teammates to generate chances against a stout CMS defense. Freshman Alex Wang (Saratoga, Calif. / The Harker School) also scored twice for the Beavers, while sophomores Rahul Arun (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E Stevenson) and Alex Janosi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter) each found the back of the net one time.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will play their final home match of the season on Wednesday, Nov. 7 against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Senior Night.
