WHITTIER, Calif. (Nov. 7, 2015) – Senior James Blackwood (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) led the charge for Caltech men's water polo at RV/Division III No. 2 Whittier College on Saturday morning.
The Beavers were able to trim the deficit from their previous matchup this season by three, with the Poets claiming the 15-6 victory to improve to 16-10 overall and 5-1 in the SCIACA while the Beavers drop to 7-15 (0-6).
Blackwood had a hand in three goals over the first half and freshman Charles Ross (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) impressed with nine saves over the same period, but Whittier built up an 8-3 lead at the break and put the game away with a 7-3 advantage in the second half, where freshman Billy Bloomquist (Campbell, Calif. / The Harker School) struck for a brace on assists from freshman Eshan Govil (Redwood City, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) and junior Christopher Bradley (Half Moon Bay, Calif. / Serra), who scored in the second quarter. Sophomore Richard May (Guilford, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) also tallied an assist while Blackwood added three steals and two field blocks and junior Tomas Tussie (Weston, Fla. / Cypress Bay) drew four exclusions. Freshman Shaurya Gilani (Chicago, Ill. / Adlai Stevenson) turned in a solid performance between the pipes in the second half, making six stops.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers host DIII RV Occidental College (2-17, 0-6) on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. in a Veteran's Day Orange Out event.
