LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 13, 2014) – Senior Ben Grabowski (Lake Forest Park, Wash. / Inglemoor) stopped 18 shots to allow the Caltech men's water polo team a chance to rally late at Occidental College, but the Tigers held on for a tight 11-9 victory on Wednesday evening.
The Tigers improve to 6-22 overall and 1-6 in the SCIAC, while the Beavers are now 7-18 (0-7).
Caltech took the early lead to hold a one-goal advantage through the first quarter and nearly kept the margin at halftime, but Occidental scored late in the second quarter to even the score at 4-4 going into the break.
A 5-2 edge in the third quarter made the difference for the Tigers as they also tacked on two straight goals to open up a five-goal lead early in the fourth quarter, and although the Beavers scored the final three goals of the match, they were not quite enough to come all the way back.
A quartet of Beavers found the back of the net. As usual, new program record-holder sophomore Chris Bradley (Half Moon Bay, Calif. / Serra) led the way with his 24th hat trick of the season while sophomore Tomas Tussie (Weston, Fla. / Cypress Bay) and juniors Patric Eck (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) and Jim Blackwood (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) each netted twice.
Head Coach Pat Beemer and the Beavers will close out the regular season at Chapman University (14-9, 5-2) on Saturday, Nov. 15. A live vide stream will be available online via the team's schedule page at GoCaltech.com.
