ROME, Ga. (Oct. 17, 2019) – Juniors James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) and Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) of the Caltech men's tennis team won their opening-round doubles match at the 2019 ITA Cup, and in the process earned All-American status for the third consecutive year.
The most decorated doubles team in Caltech history defeated Southern Virginia University's Daniel Blonquist and Kukutla Motlojoa, 6-3, 6-0, on Thursday, the 22nd-ranked doubles team in Division III. Wei and Shanker leaned on their serve early, but once their play from the baseline began to catch up the duo rolled their way through the rest of the match. The Caltech pair did manage to find themselves in a 0-40 hole to open the second set on Shanker's serve but saved all three break points, stole the game and never looked back.
The Caltech duo will next line up against Peter Frelinghuysen and Alex Taylor, the top-seeded pair from Williams College on Friday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. ET.
